Books

Probably a short post today.

Everyone appreciates how important books are to kids. It’s everywhere: “read to your kids, it’ll pay off.” “you want your kid to go to university? Read to them.” on and on. My kids love books. I love books. I read to the kids everyday and have since birth. But nobody tells you how hard it is to keep them from being ripped, rained on, peed on, folded into oragami, jam covered, or otherwise destroyed. The library? Amazing, we’ve read thousands of books we would otherwise not have access to. Our preschool also has a library, as does our church, and the kids school. Trying to keep the books separated as to which library each comes from? You need an engineering degree. That’s not even counting the aforementioned destruction, and having to pay double price for each book that gets ruined.

The emails: “Is it an error or do you still have these 6 books  you borrowed 3.5 years ago?” Or “sorry but did you realize that the books you returned smell strongly of ammonia? ” (cat pee) My favorite is “We need you to return the books from last school year before your children can borrow anymore this year, also I think you accidentally gave us books from a different library as we do not recognize the ones that were in your child’s backpack today.”

I want my kids to read, definitely. But this subject alone makes me wonder how any parent makes it out of their child’s first 18 years with their sanity intact.

Today I spent a big part of the day just focusing on keeping the living room floor safe from trpping hazards. Yesterday I tidied my bedroom floor. A little everyday goes a long way. Or so I’m told.
