As you may have noticed by now, I love to focus my cleaning and tidying on my living room… kinda often… Now I’m going to explain why I think that is.
We have a large front window that is south facing. During the summer this isn’t as imporant because the sun is fairly high in the sky, and we get lots of sunlight, but it’s still the window we get the most light from. During the fall and winter however, specifically between October and March, the sun is low, the days are short, and the sun stays in the southern sky most of the day. All that to say, that we spend a lot of time in it. And it’s the first room anyone who comes in our front door (including most people who live here) sees. We love sunshine, we live for it.
PThe kitchen is attached directly behind the living room so it’s the only other ‘living area.’ It’s the general space that any company sees. I love the layout of my house for this reason. The playroom, bedrooms, and two full baths are upstairs. Sometimes guests go there if there are kids. I only worry about the general safety of it, and rarely how tidy it is, because kids don’t mind as much if the place is a bit messy. The basement is for my brother in law to live, and for storage.
I highly recommend having areas that you focus on regularly, and that these areas be your high traffic, high visibility areas. Yes, the bedrooms etc need to be cleaned too, but as far as feeling ontop of things, it really helps to have space we maintain, and spaces we work on after these are done. My list is the. living room, and entrance room. Then the half bathroom, and finally the kitchen. If I have to/want to go further, I tidy the playroom next, and the main bathroom upstairs. The bedrooms are always the lowest priority. I like to keep toys and non sleep stuff out of the bedrooms, so there is no reason for guests or friends to go in there. I know many people will argue otherwise, but to me, bedrooms are simply not a priority for my housekeeping energy.
Today my intention is to tidy the kitchen, and stop the floor. If there’s time, I would love to vacuum the stairs. I did manage to sweep and vacuum the living room yesterday.
